Our city, often called the Gateway to the West, is home to 18 million people. It is an ancient city with deep roots in the early church. But today, most will go their entire lives never having heard the good news. The remnants from that time were eradicated through genocide and decades of repression. Now Islam is central to their cultural identity, and they take great pride in their history of sultans and a vast empire. Still, the Spirit is working and a new generation of believers has sprung up. About 1,600 people gather weekly across the city in small gatherings to worship the Son, and with social media and access to the Word online, that number is slowly growing.
While we are in a large metropolis, we've found that the warmth of the others-minded culture here often makes it feel much smaller. Neighbors and shop owners are interested in getting to know each other, chatting in line, helping you carry a heavy bag home, or giving your children little treats as they ask how they are doing. Single adults are "adopted" by their neighbors, and mothers will always find a helping hand while out with her kids, whether it is strangers carrying her stroller down a flight of stairs without being asked or a grandmother playing peek-a-boo to cheer up her baby on the bus. Deep friendships carry the utmost loyalty, and family is the foundation of society.
Our families are seeking to be faithful kingdom members here, reaching, renewing and restoring in all we do. We started a business that has enabled us to meet many business owners, young professionals and college students, building deep friendships and giving answers for their curiosity about who we are and what motivates us. We serve a small local fellowship, we seek to be generous with our time and resources as needs arise, and we seek to produce excellent products that are made here.
